Dr. Carter is a licensed psychologist who has been in private practice in Winter Park, FL since 1997. He works with adults in both individual and couples psychotherapy. Over the years Dr. Carter has helped individual clients work through an array of concerns including depression, anxiety, relationship problems, trauma, and stress related issues. He has helped couples work through numerous issues including separation, divorce, conflict, infidelities, and disconnection. In his work in both individual and couples psychotherapy Dr. Carter primarily draws from the principles of cognitive-behavioral and psychodynamic theories.
In addition to his individual and couples psychotherapy, Dr. Carter works on maximizing elite level performance with athletes, performers, and other demanding professions, including business and company leaders, attorneys, and physicians. He has worked with athletes from a broad spectrum of sports including golf, tennis, wake boarding, racing, baseball, football, basketball, and wrestling. Dr. Carter's background as a professional athlete, and his research and work with high school, college, and world class professional athletes gives him a strong perspective to work with the demands of elite performance.
Dr. Carter received his doctorate in clinical psychology from the Florida Institute of Technology and his undergraduate degree from Rollins College. Prior to attaining his doctorate, Dr. Carter was a world-ranked tennis player for ten years. He competed year-round on the professional tennis tour including the grand slam tournaments, Wimbledon, French, Australian, and the US Open. After retiring from competing on the tennis circuit, Dr. Carter served as the head tennis professional at a large public facility and coached both amateur and professional tennis players including traveling to various professional tournaments. Dr. Carter has published research in sport psychology and has taught as an adjunct professor at Rollins College. He is an alumni member of the Association of Tennis Professionals, and a member of the American Psychological Association.
Dr. Carter has recently celebrated his 25th wedding anniversary. He and his wife have one son who currently is playing professional baseball in Australia and Europe. He enjoys golf, tennis and painting in his free time. Some of his paintings are on this site.
